Rachael Miles was born in 1974. Since 1997 she has studied and been a Fellow in Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol. She has shown in numerous exhibitions in Bristol 1999-2002.

"The act of painting enables me to investigate visual language.

I am interested in how a line defines an object – marking where it ends and where another begins, and how it defines a shape in separating it from another.

I select visual material from many sources. I cut and isolate the original imagery, rendering it in a less defined yet persuasive way. These fragments are collected then re-assembled to build a picture which promotes a dialogue between potential meanings.

Through this process the work lends itself to an associative response, playing on levels of recognition. Elements of the imagery act as a trigger for memories that inform how the picture is read and understood."
