This exhibition is being held at the Walker Art Gallery, 20 September 2008 - 9 January 2009

Oil on canvas, 25.2 x 30.5 cm, 2007
My paintings are subdued, discreet glimpses, sometimes of mundane occurrences,
sometimes of dormant, poised states of time and place. I am interested in the
nuances of our relationship with the infrastructure of the everyday, often in the
context of travel and urbanity, and the impact these surroundings have on our sense
of self.
The recurring sub-themes are the uneasy duality of alienation through interaction, of
people removed and absorbed in a private world whilst in the company of others;
of company without companionship and how the solitude of a person's internal
landscape can seem reflected back in the external landscape they inhabit.
The subjects in my paintings often appear as overlooked and forgotten elements
in an absent narrative; stills removed from their film. I think of them as vignettes
capturing moments and atmospheres of anticipation, abandonment and lives lived
just out of view, of being the accumulation of activity and inactivity that create a sense and mood of place.
