Acrylic and Dulux ‘one coat’ emulsion on board,
24 x 15.5 cm, 2007
I paint on found and fabricated sections of board in one sitting in site specific
locations. My work explores the environment, whether constructed or natural. I am
interested in a sense of place and atmosphere and the painterly depiction of space
and distance, all of which can be associated with both landscape and interior. Until
three years ago my work was primarily landscape.
The opportunity to exhibit in a disused office space led me to begin the process of
painting in a man-made environment where I generated a mini-series which, as with
my approach to landscape, was produced in one sitting using an opaque palette of
white emulsion and acrylics. I have since been based in Oriel Davies, domestic Belgian
interiors, S-CAT and a disused MOD radio station.
'S-CAT LRAB1' is where I teach. It is a Life Room and I have attempted to capture its
atmosphere through the sense of composition and harmonious perspective in the
painting.
