'Oriental Garden, Kyoto'

John Moores Winner 1985

Acrylic on canvas

250 x 370.5cm

"'Oriental Garden Kyoto' is one of 20 or 30 large works I made after a long-overdue trip to Japan in 1982. It's a painting of a Japanese ornamental garden, painted almost the same size as an actual garden. A celebration of big fish in small ponds."

Bruce McLean was born in Glasgow in 1944. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and St Martin's School of Art. He is head of graduate painting at the Slade.
