Super Star Fucker - Andy Warhol Text Painting by Peter Davies (born 1970)
Acrylic on canvas, painted in 2001
Acquired from John Moores 22 in 2002 (No. 2002.39)
First prize (Purchase prize), John Moores 22, 2002
Davies featured in the 1997 exhibition 'Sensation' at London's Royal Academy which launched the YBAs (Young British Artists). His text paintings include a series listing artists' names. Starting with Warhol's name in the centre, the rest grew like a flow chart. Davies avoids repeating any single phrase, colour or star shape. As well as conveying a sense of mischief, he has said, I want to combine the sensuality and beauty of formalism with the humour and toughness of conceptualism. He was born in Edinburgh and completed his studies at Goldsmiths College, London in 1996.
On winning the prize, Davies said:
It is going to enable me to not worry about money so much for a while and concentrate on making what I really want to make rather than what I feel is a sensible thing to make, [something] that someone might buy.
On 21 August 2008 he comments:
"Winning the John Moores was a huge honour and a major boost to my career, both psychologically and financially. But additionally for me is the enduring sense, having won, of being put in the company of so many great artists who themselves are prizewinners, and who I admire and look up to so much."
