One aspect of my painting over the past three years has involved an exploration of the portrait. In recent work I have been drawn to elements of biography and the images that surround an individual. By interpreting and reconstructing imagery from the past, I create oblique narratives that concern a desire for a sense of connectivity.
Utilising archive film footage made by my uncle before he passed away in 2006, Near
the Site evokes a personal and nostalgic climate. Movement and sequences can be
read, interrupted by dislocated still images that flash up recollections or associations,
blurring definitions of time. A scene that was once visited - a building site, a playground,
a garden pond - can be repeated and re-imagined from an alternate perspective. I like
to play on the confusion between personal experience and collective memory as the
streaming of thoughts and the act of painting muddle the distinction between
documentary and fiction.
