The John Moores competition is Britain's leading contemporary painting exhibition.
It is open to artists living or based in the UK. This year, for the first time, slides rather than original works were submitted. This made the competition more open and accessible than ever before. It also resulted in one of the most exciting shows so far.
The judges for John Moores 22 were:
- Fiona Rae, artist
- Jenny Saville, artists
- Matthew Collings, artist / writer

More than 5,000 entries were received. Thirty eight paintings made the final show. The winner received a prize of £25,000 and their painting joined the Walker Art Gallery's prestigious contemporary collection. Four other prizewinners received £2,500. John Moores 22 was part of the Liverpool Biennial 2002.
