Artist's statement

The Masquerade bar in Liverpool is a small world of big characters, two of whom, Chanelle and Marlene, feature in this work.  The cowboy represents both gay and straight sentiments as expressed in the title; the gun points to either the sexy hostess or to the bar entrance and a different world of fun.

Gary Sollars was born in Chester. He studied at Middlesex University 1986- 1990. His exhibitions include BP Portrait Award National Portrait Gallery London 1995 & 1998, Sussex Open (winner) Brighton Museum & Art Gallery 1998, Times of Our Lives Whitworth Art Gallery Manchester 2000, Berlin Kunstsalon Berlin 2005, Voyeur Terry Duffy Gallery London 2005. Has shown in all three Liverpool Biennials. Exhibited work at the Walker Art Gallery for World Aids Week 2003. Hosts performance events called ‘Dollman Disco.’
