This exhibition marked the 25th John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize and 50 years since the first John Moores Liverpool exhibition was held at the Walker Art Gallery in 1957. As in previous years, the exhibition profiled the best established and emerging artists from across the UK. Today’s John Moores prizewinners and exhibitors will be the future stars of the art world.

To mark the importance of these 50 years of activity, there was also a related display of previous John Moores prizewinners|. This included important works acquired for the collection such as those by Jack Smith and David Hockney and, more recently, by artists including Michael Raedecker and Peter Davies. The first prizewinning painting, 'Fontana' by Peter McDonald|, was purchased for the Walker Art Gallery’s collection and has joined this distinguished group.
