An interactive tour of the gallery introducing a range of artworks to the class. There is a discussion guided by the member of staff through skilful questioning and the pupils are encouraged to explore the artwork for themselves. During these discussions, the pupils learn more about the roles of artists and the purpose of art. As well as through discussion, the pupils engage with the artworks with a series of drawing tasks and creative responses.
Draw to explore is led by a member of staff from the education team. The session begins with a warm welcome to the Walker Art Gallery. For pupils who have never visited an art gallery before there is discussion about what they expect to see during their visit and an opportunity for them to ask questions.
Following this brief introduction, we begin our interactive tour of the gallery. A range of artworks are introduced to the class, there is a discussion guided by the member of staff through skillful questioning and the pupils are encouraged to explore the artwork for themselves. During these discussions, the pupils learn more about the roles of artists and the purpose of art. They are encouraged to say what they see, feel and think about the paintings, sculptures and their surroundings. Their visual language and critical thinking skills are developed during these elements.
As well as through discussion, the pupils interact with the artworks with a series of drawing tasks. These tasks begin as fun ‘warm up exercise’ encouraging the pupils to observe, experiment, and develop their drawing skills. As the session progresses the drawing tasks become more in-depth allowing pupils to expand their own creativity, make first-hand observational drawing and develop ideas. The drawing activities can include individual, pair and group task. Pupils are encouraged and supported with their drawing by the member of staff leading the session.
Draw to explore allows pupils to engage with the artworks by having a creative response to them. Their speaking and listening skills, confidence in drawing and critical thinking skills are developed. All work produced during the session can be taken back to school and added to sketch books. This session is a unique opportunity for pupils to develop art skills within a cultural setting and be inspired by internationally important collections in the Walker Art Gallery.
Art and Design
