Stories, songs and art to develop language and literacy skills.
Did you know that 58% of children starting primary school are already behind in their reading and 34% of children leaving primary in England are unable to read to the required level? (Beanstalk Charity 2017).
At the Walker Art Gallery, we want to help to address this issue and encourage children to develop their language and literacy skills and create a love of reading through our new Storywalkers education sessions.
Our programme of free activities featuring stories, songs and art for early years children will be launched at the Walker Art Gallery on Saturday, 10 November.
Storywalkers is a collection of events linked to language and literacy for children up to seven years old to encourage early communication, physical development, language and literacy skills, as well as encouraging a love of reading, writing and art.
The Walker Art Gallery will officially launch the programme at a family day on Saturday, 10 November, from 11am-4pm with taster sessions of each of the activities. It’s also an opportunity to introduce young people to the Gallery, find out more about other resources available and meet the team behind the new sessions.
