Walker Art Gallery room guide
The works in this room span over sixty years. Alexander Stanhope Forbes's 'Off to the Fishing Ground' was painted in 1886, the same year he co-founded the New English Art Club, considered at the time to be the modern wing of British art. Roger Fry, whose 'Still life with Biscuit Tin and Pots' is shown here, organised two important exhibitions in 1910 and 1912, which brought the work of the leading artists such as Cézanne and Picasso to London and influenced a generation of painters. Lucien Freud's 'Interior at Paddington' was completed in 1951, by which time the work of artists such as Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash and Ben Nicholson - all featured here - had succeeded in establishing Britain as one of the leading forces in the development of European painting.
