This is a free event but booking is required. To book a place or for further details contact 020 7019 4947 or visit the BA Festival of Science website.

Introduced by Richard Benjamin, director of the International Slavery Museum, and chaired by David Dickson, director, SciDev.Net, the programme will include:

Deciphering the African diaspora with genetics - Mark Jobling, Professor of Genetics, University of Leicester. Colonial expansions and subsequent slavery brought together populations that had been largely separated for hundreds of generations. Genetic differences between them allow the history and genetic impact of slavery to be deciphered in modern populations, reflecting the sexual politics of slavery, and offering the hope of retracing ancestry to Africa.

Venture Smith: a model for using history and science in diaspora studies? - David Richardson, Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, University of Hull

Grains of Change: Genetic insights into sugar and slavery - Tim Cox, Professor of Medicine, University of Cambridge. Exploration of human genetics reveals much about the slave trade and how populations have been saccharated. Driven by cruel greed, bi-directional trade brought out diseases of genetic maladaptation in those forcibly displaced. Use of sugar induces nutritional diseases in those genetically predisposed - and burgeoning industrialization has ensured enslavement as part of the legacy of our sweet tooth.

The genetic legacy of the slave trade: a Liverpool response - Ray Costello, local author and historian. The effect of the Liverpool Slave Trade not only impacted upon the lives of millions of people of African descent in the Caribbean, America and the African Continent, but left a genetic legacy in what has been called Britain's second city. The polarisation of Black and white has historically presented a unique human dilemma in post-bellum societies.

This event is sponsored by The Wellcome Trust.

International Slavery Museum (Lecture theatre, 4th floor). 2.30-5.30pm, Tuesday, September 09, 2008.

Wonders of the Solar System

3-2-1-blast off! Come on an adventure around our Solar System without leaving the comfort of your chair in our fantastic family show. Free tickets are available from the ground floor information desk only.

World Museum Liverpool (Planetarium). 2.30pm, Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

A tale of two planets

Take a closer look at Mars and Saturn in this fascinating show, and find out about the star patterns we can find in the night sky.
Please collect your free ticket from the ground floor information desk before the show.

World Museum Liverpool (Planetarium). 3.15pm, Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

Winter night sky

The Winter night sky takes a 10 minute look at the myths and constellations of the most interesting and diverse of the seasonal night skies.

World Museum Liverpool (Planetarium). 4.05pm, Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

Picture of the Month talk - September 2008

September's picture of the month is 'Off to the Fishing Grounds' by Stanhope Forbes.
