About this object

A head of a female or a youth wearing a wreath from a votive statue. The hair on the forehead below the wreath is arranged in double rows of curls. On the crown of the head the hair is made of shallow grooves that spring forward from a central parting. The back of the hair is arranged in a projecting peak while the criss cross grooves suggest that the hair was kept in a confining net.

  • Note
Droop commented on the delicacy of this head and dated it to the 5th century BC. He saw development of the 6th century examples in the deeper setting of the eyes, the flatter surfaces of the eyeballs, the sharper more definite lids and the more natural through not yet correct form. The great beauty of the piece owned much to the curve of the cheek and the chin and the delicate cutting of the grave unsmiling lips. He assumed that the artist had not learnt how rightly to give vivid expression to the face and still gives them the slight archait smile.
Garland similar to 16.5.72.68 and 16.5.72.24.
