Ernest Harold Jones

Artist and excavator

E. Harold Jones was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire on March 7, 1877. He assisted in excavations in Egypt for John Garstang of the University of Liverpool. He was first employed by Garstang as an illustrator for 1903-1904 season at Beni Hasan. After this he took on responsibilities directing excavations at Beni Hasan, Hierakonpolis, Esna, Hissaya, Abydos and various sites in Nubia. In 1907 he parted company with Garstang and joined the expedition of Theodore Davies in the Valley of the Kings. He died in Luxor aged 34.
