About this object

Short string composed of disc beads of shell, faience, glazed steatite and carnelian; three barrel-shaped beads of stone; a pebble pendant; a shell; and a cowrie shell. Found near the hands (placed on the chest) of a child about six years old, placed within a wooden coffin (110 x 30 x 25 cm). This was an undisturbed burial, assigned the number 1001.

    Description: Excavations directed by Henri Frankfort for the Egypt Exploration Society resumed at Abydos in 1925. Only a summary of the results were published by Frankfort in the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology 16, pp. 213-219. World Museum did not subscribe to this excavation but in 1956 the museum purchased much of Norwich Castle Museum's Egyptian collection which contained Egypt Exploration Society excavated material donated by the East Anglia Egyptian Society who subscribed to the EES excavations at Abydos and Amarna. We have 19 items from these excavations.
