E Timperley

Donor of antiquities

Donor of over 216 antiquities in 1956 who resided at 25 Dorset Road, Merton Park, London, SW19. So far we have very little information about Mr Timperley. The collection includes material from Egypt, the Near East and ancient Greece and Rome.

His correspondence with the museum commenced on 2 January 1956 when he said his friend Mr Trevor Hughes who taught at Merchant Taylor’s School in Crosby would be delivering three cases of antiquities. He explained how he acquired a collection from Jonathan King of London who had printed a catalogue called “The Palestine and Eastern Exhibition”. Mr Timperley said that the exhibition was “about 40 years ago”. In about 1944 Mr Timperley sent to York Museum some of his Cypriote pottery figures and Egyptian shabtis but Miss Lewis of York Museum said they were unsuitable and suggested they be sent to Liverpool. Mr Timperley continued to keep sending cases of his antiquities to Liverpool by rail over 1956.

Most of the 27 shabtis in his collection are from excavations of the Egypt Exploration Fund, particularly at Abydos 1899-1901.
