Wellcome Historical Medical Museum

Dispersed collections of Henry Wellcome

Following Henry Wellcome's death in 1936 the process of dispersing his non-medical collections began. The collections were enormous and this process would continue for almost 50 years. A very comprehensive account of the dispersal can be found in the Museums Journal Vol 86: 53-536, 1986 supplement (Georgina Russell, 'The Wellcome Historical Medical Museum's Dispersal of Non-Medical Material 1936-1983'). A photocopy can be found in the Humanities history files in the file cabinet marked 'Wellcome Miscellaneous', file 'Wellcome donors'. The collection is notorious for its poor documentation and lack of provenance.

See the Wellcome Library's website for details on how to find out more about the dispersed collection using their archives http://wellcomelibrary.org/what-we-do/history-of-wellcome-library/wellcome-historical-medical-museum/
