Greville John Chester

Cleric; collector of antiquities; author

Rev. Greville John Chester spent many winters in Egypt and collected antiquities, mainly surface finds from archaeological sites such as Tell el Yahudiya in the Delta. He collected for museums such as the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Accessions within our collections suggest he was selling antiquities to this museum when he was returning from Egypt via steam boat to Liverpool. See Dawson and Uphill, 'Who Was Who in Egypology' 2nd revised edition (London, 1972) pp. 62-3.
