John Greville Rev Chester

Clergyman and collector of antiquities (b.1830. d. 1892)

Spent many winters in Egypt and collected antiquities, mainly surface finds from archaeological sites such as Tell el Yahudiya in the Delta. He collected for museums such as the British Museum, Ashmolean and Fitzwilliam. Accessions within our collections suggest he was selling antiquities to this museum when he was returning from Egypt via boat to Liverpool. See Dawson and Uphill, 'Who Was Who in Egypology' 2nd revised edition (London, 1972) pp. 62-3.
