Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson

English army surgeon, administrator and collector of Egyptology

Collector of Egyptian antiquities and donor to Fitzwilliam Museum in 1943. World Museum has material from the Robert Gayer-Anderson collection that was purchased from Norwich Castle Museum in 1956. Labels on the back of some of these objects indicate that they were first presented on loan in 1917 and paper archives record that they were transferred to Norwich Castle Museum in 1944. After Robert Gayer-Anderson's death smaller amounts of his collection were distributed to other museums such as about 53 objects, mainly from the Coptic Period, given as his bequest in 1947 (accession series 47.27). Later on in 1959 a jackal-headed walking stick was given to World Museum by Robert Gayer-Anderson's brother (accession no. 59.32.189).
