Giuseppe Mattei

Member of the Mattei family, collectors of antiquities

Duca Giuseppe Mattei was a member of the illustrious Mattei family, who lived in Rome. The Duca Mattei was responsible for initiating the sale of the Villa Mattei collection of sculpture, beginning in 1770. Duca Mattei subsequently sold groups of sculptures to a range of dealers, including Gavin Hamilton, Thomas Jenkins and Bartolomeo Cavaceppi, and by 1777 many had already found their way to England.
