Lionel H Hanbury

Collector associated with the antiquities collections

Sold an Egyptian stela 49.56 to the museum in 1949 for £10. In a letter to the curator of the Museum dated 8 September 1949, Colonel Hanbury wrote, "(The stele) has been in my family for some considerable time and as I am clearing out my house I want to get rid of it." Other than this we have no information about its provenance but it has been suggested to be from an Abydos workshop (Amy de Joia). A predecessor of Colonel Hanbury showed the stela to the Egyptologist E.A Wallis Budge at the British Museum in July 1886 who wrote a translation of the text. Budge's letters are now in the museum archive.

Colonel Hanbury was chairman of the Guardian Assurance Company and lived at Hitcham House and later at Hitcham Park Cottage, Burnham. He married Margaret Colemore Allhusen, daughter of Henry Christian Stanley Allhusen and Elizabeth Alice Eden, in 1891 in Eton, Buckinghamshire. (Margaret Colemore Allhusen was born in 1869 in Gateshead, Durham and died on 3 March 1949 in Burnham, Buckinghamshire
