Statuette of Male

About this object

Modern portrait of Trajan restored on an ancient statuette of a seated philosopher. This is a copy, possibly by Antonio D’Este, of a portrait of Trajan of the so-called ‘Dezennalientypus’. The body is clad in chiton and large himation and copies a statue type named Neapel-Capitol and reconstructed with images of Menander. His be-sandaled feet seem over-sized, and he leans against a chest. This combination of an imperial portrait with the body of a seated philosopher or seated magistrate seems quite common in the 18th century. It is a companion to Ince No. 49.
