About this object

Bust of a virile athlete, the head slightly turned to the right with the eyes almost looking down, thick lips and eyes which have well defined eye lids. The hair is short and wavy in shallow curls. The head had little restoration mainly on two thirds of the nose and part of the right ear. The bust may have been part of the same statue but if ancient it was properly smoothed down and recut.

  • Note
Said to have been found near Naples. Brought to Rome with 59.148.100 and bought by Blundell from the dealer and restorer Giovanni Volpato. The bust resembles copies of the Discobolus of Myron and of the Diomedes of Cresilias, while most opinions accept Myron as the author, Ashmole suggested that it was the work of a young Cresilas. Compares well with the Chinnery Hermes from the British Museum No 1812,0616.1 in the collection of William Chinnery before it was acquired by the British Museum in 1812 and was known popularly as the Chinnery Hermes.
