Bust of Trajan

About this object

Portrait of Trajan restored on an ancient bust.
The head is turned left and slightly upwards. It portrays Trajan in the ‘Opferbild’ type – best recognized by the long row of parallel hair locks terminating in a claw above the outer corner of the left eye, and is a high quality example of this military-style haircut. The clearly shaped hair around the temples stands in strong contrast to the barely engraved hair at the back. The motifs on the bust suggest that it dates to the Hadrianic or early Antonine period. The face has been heavily restored in terms of the nose, eyebrows, chin, upper lip and ears.
