About this object

Lid of ash chest of Cornelia Staphyle with two pediments separated by a bolster and decoration of two birds, facing each other and pecking, in each of the pediments. This lid is presented as the lid of the ash chest of Cornelia Staphyle 59.148.327a and although it fits well the ash chest it was not its original pediment as illustrated in Monumenta Mattheiana which showed an undecorated pediment flanked by bolsters. This original lid of the ash chest probably never came to Henry Blundell's collection. 59.148.327b was probably a later addition created to fit the ash chest.
