About this object

Large plaited palm leaf mat in plain and ochre-red, with red coloured carrying tie affixed to one end. Decorated with six broad, zig-zag bands in ochre-red colour running horizontally. Red coloured boarder around the edges decorated with darker triangular motifs. Attachment loops at two of the corners on the side at which the carrying tie is fixed. The mat has a dirty horizontal band across its top surface and appears to have been used.

    According to David Heathcote (The Arts of the Hausa, 1976 p.98) 'Tabarme' is mat in the Hausa language.
