About this object

One of a pair of large Nepalese brass guardian lions or seng-ge. Male figure with wrathful expression, matted mane and arched tail. Nepalese script dates figure to Vikrama year 1965 (1908). Figure stands on custom made wooden plinth painted and decorated with floral designs.

    Pair of Nepalese Seng-ge made in Patan, Nepal valley by a Newar. 9 parts copper and 1 part dista. Bought from R S [Rai Sahib] Lachmi Narain Pradhan, a Newar landlord in Sikkim.

    Curator's note: Although this pair of sengge is catalogued it is in a section of the List of Curios that isn't dated. It is likely that Bell collected this pair of items during the early part of his tenure as Political Officer Sikkim (resident 1908-1918).
