Shakyamuni (Historical) Buddha seated in yogic pose, with right hand reaching down to touch earth in bhumisparsa mudra, left hand empty resting on lap. Newari style nimbus decorated with standing and seated figures and reclining Buddha at top. Main Buddha sits on deep rectangular pedestal.

    Curator's notes: Mrs Hilda Toyne was the daughter of a Colonel Maddox. Colonel Maddox collected eight pieces most likely during the Younghusband Punitive Mission to Tibet 1903-04. Although Maddox was said to have been presented with one of the items by the 13th Dalai Lama.

    Notes written on object card record ' base shows strong Kashmiri design in openwork and halo - E.Indian influence with seven scenes from Buddha's life, Nepalese tradition'.
