About this object

An adze in grey stone, probably argillite, with an asymmetrical outline and a quadrangular cross-section. The butt is slightly reduced and the surfaces of the butt sides are ground, the other surfaces polished. The poll is asymmetrical and possibly broken off on one side. The bevel is convex, and the chin curved. The cutting edge is curved. The front profile is slightly convex, the back straight.

The cutting edge is sharp. There is a fracture on the back and possibly on the poll. There are the remains of an old label on the front and 'Petone' 'N. Zealand' written on front and back.
