Robert Gladstone (1870-1940) was the son of the merchant Robert Gladstone after whom Gladstone Dock, Liverpool, was named. Robert Gladstone Junior trained as a solicitor, but became a respected historian and collector, and began writing a history of Liverpool (unfinished). The Athenaeum Library, Liverpool, holds many of his records. In 1924 he began a campaign to create a special shipping gallery at Liverpool Museum, and on his death in 1940 left a bequest for the construction of a maritime museum.
