Augustus Hamilton

Augustus Hamilton was born in Dorset and travelled to New Zealand in 1876 to teach in primary schools. He joined the Hawke's Bay Philosophical Society and established the first Napier Museum. He was appointed Registrar of the University of Otago in 1890, and was Director of the Colonial Museum in Wellington (later the Dominion Museum and now Te Papa Museum of New Zealand) ) from 1903 until his death in 1913. His personal collections were mainly from Hawke's Bay, and his main interests were carvings, garments and New Zealand Flax fabrics, and artefacts associated with fishing.
