Robert Fitch

Associated with Ethnology and Antiquities collections

An eminent antiquarian and Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries, Fitch was also secretary of the Norfolk Archaeological Society and collected archaeological items, notably Roman, Saxon and medieval. Fitch was Curator of Geology at Norfolk and Norwich Museums from 1841 to 1894. He was involved with the move of Norfolk and Norwich Museum into Norwich Castle in 1891, when he donated his collection together with funds to build and fit-out a room with showcases. It was the largest and most important donation to Norwich from a private collector. Fitch also made a large collection of ethnographic items from Oceania, North America and the Caribbean, acquired by Norwich Castle Museum in 1894. Norwich Castle Museum has a hand-written catalogue of the collection.
