There are over 67,000 rocks, minerals and fossils in the earth science collections from worldwide locations. They range in age from 4.5 billion years to 5,000 years ago.

The collections were made mainly in the 19th and 20th century and sold or donated to the museum from 1870 onwards.

The majority of the collections are British for rocks and fossils and worldwide for minerals.
