William Robert Ogilvie-Grant

Educated at Edinburgh, he joined the British Museum (Natural History) in 1882. In charge of the ornithological section in 1885 while Sharpe in India retrieving Hume’s collection. He remained in the department after Sharpe’s return and helped to raise its status to the best in the world. He colleted in Sokotra, Madera, the Canary Islands and the Azores, and organised and encouraged the expeditions of other naturalists. Edited the Bulletin of the B.O.C., 1904-14; contributed to the museum’s Catalogue of Birds, Vols 17 (part, 22, 26; author of British Game Birds and Wildfowl (1912) and numerous ornithological papers.
