Paul Comolera

French sculptor (1818-1897) famed for his animal sculptures. He worked for the Minton Factory, Stoke-on-Trent from 1873 to 1876 and modelled a series of large-scale animals and birds.

Paul Comolera was born in Paris and trained with the sculptor Francois Rude in the early 1840s. He became one of the foremost French animal sculptors of his generation and exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon. He travelled to England in the late 1860s and established himself in London. From 1873 to 1876 he worked at the Minton factory in Stoke-on-Trent as a modeller and created a series of large-scale animal and bird figures.
