Specularite form of hematite from Egremont, Cumbria LIV.1980.802.AD
Hematite is our major source of iron. It was formed when mineral-rich fluids dissolved limestone to leave spaces. These holes were filled with other mineral fluids rich in iron that formed the hematite.
Large amounts of hematite have been found in western Cumbria. Much of the industry in this area was once based around mining and smelting iron ore.
