Whether you see footballers as local heroes or overpaid prima donnas, they are human beings with their own origins and families. The personal stories in this section of Only A Game? showed how players' lives are caught up in the dramas of the modern world. They tell us something about ourselves. They tell us the story of Europe.

Great European players of yesteryear such as Ferenc Puskás, George Best, Franz Beckenbauer, Kevin Keegan and Bobby Moore, as well as of modern-day stars like Everton's Mikel Arteta and Chelsea FC goalkeeper Petr Cech were featured.
