Ancient Egypt

I'm sure you agree that it isn't easy buying presents for your children when they are grown up. However, I think that my son will be delighted with the gift I've had made for him.
Oh, no, it's not his birthday - it's just a little reward for the splendid military service he has displayed in the army of King Rameses. Like a doting parent, I'm very proud of his achievements and I think he deserves something a little special.
It's a horse whip - but not just any old horse whip. It has the most elegant wooden handle carved in the style of a galloping horse. Much like those that pull his chariot when he is speeding into battle in the service of his majesty.
It's such a wonderful example of craftsmanship and artistry which, as an architect of repute myself, I can truly appreciate. I'm sure he will be delighted with it too.
When I was a young man, I too worked with horses. Well, not directly with them, more of a management position really. Supervising the work force and looking after the general running and finances. I could have made use of such a whip on occasion too - were I not a mild and gentle man.
Still, it was excellent training for military life and managing people. Indeed, as a high priest I often hold the steering ropes of life, acting as a trusty helmsman for those requiring guidance. Much in the same way that a charioteer guides his horses.
Though with a good deal less excitement and adventure, alas.
