Ancient Egypt

I'm not one to gossip but did you hear about Seneb? He's the laundryman from the house of Padiamun just around the corner. Well, by all accounts he's run away. How his master's clothes must smell!
It doesn't surprise me, mind you, because he was always a bit wild. They should have given him a job as a potter to keep an eye on him. You can't get very far when you're grubbing about in mud all day, that's for sure.
But no, they make him laundryman and let him wander off down to the river. Just asking for trouble, if you ask me. Do you know that one time he brought back his master's clothes with big holes in them and said he'd wrestled them from the jaws of a crocodile and almost lost an arm. And they believed him!
He'll be back soon enough though because they've sent five men after him and they always catch the runaways. Then he'll be given an even worse job than dealing with soiled linen!
I'd never run away. I like it here and they like me. Truth is, I don't mind working hard. Serving food, cleaning, fetching and carrying, making clothes - there's a lot worse jobs to be done, I can tell you. One day I might even be head servant in the household. Fancy that!
