Most of the Anglo-Saxon objects displayed in the museum were excavated by Rev. Bryan Faussett in Kent in the late 1700s. He excavated over 750 burials in 13 years and recorded the finds in a series of notebooks, which was very unusual at that time. His collection was offered to the British Museum in 1853 but was turned down. Fortunately the collection was bought by Joseph Mayer and included in his donation to Liverpool Museum (now World Museum Liverpool) in 1867.
