Sword Pommel

bronze coloured metal piece with carved characters

c.550 AD

This silver sword pommel is inscribed “Sigi owns me.” The Anglo-Saxons brought a new language to Britain that developed into the English that we speak today. Sometimes they wrote it down using the runic alphabet as on this pommel.

Only the richest of men would have owned a sword. This pommel comes from the burial of a warrior leader.

Accession Number: M6402
