Hands on activities at the Weston Discovery Centre

There's always lots to see and do at the Weston Discovery Centre, with activities based around different parts of World Museum Liverpool's collections. The centre has three themed areas, each illustrated with a wealth of fantastic objects and fun activities to entertain and inspire you.
Some of the themes you can explore are:
Textiles
- Try on costumes (for adults and children) from the Arctic to Africa, the Pacific to Central America
- Test your world geography
- Try your hand at weaving and jewellery making
- Test your powers of deduction in our fiendish footwear quiz
Archaeology
- Learn some of the techniques used by archaeologists
- Find out what plants grew at a prehistoric site in Halewood
- Grind corn like a Roman slave
- Try your hand at stone age axe sharpening
- Discover the magical powers of ancient Egyptian jewellery
- Build a model of a medieval timber house
- Play some 2000 year-old board games
- Find out what can you discover from broken pottery
Communication
- Read and write Egyptian hieroglyphics
- Find out what the decorations on African clothes mean
- Try on traditional masks from around the world and find out what they are used for
- Operate a Javanese shadow puppet
- Test your sense of smell with the Japanese game, Ko-awase
- Find out what different types of jewellery can mean
- Discover what 'cylinder seals' are and try using one
- Discover how people in Ghana weighed gold
School and group visits are welcome. Special hands-on sessions that meet National Curriculum requirements can be arranged for pre-booked groups.
