Brown stone tray showing a dead ibex

Length:6.7cm

Just like many women today, the ancient Egyptian women wore make up. Tomb paintings show the famous heavily elongated and darkened eyes of Egyptian women. To look like that the women wore eye make-up called kohl, made from malachite (green oxide of copper) or galena (grey sulphide of lead). They also painted their lips with red ochre mixed with oil or fat. Red ochre was also used as rouge on the cheeks. Henna was used to decorate the soles of the feet, the palms of the hands, nails and hair.

This item is a steatite cosmetic tray in the form of a slaughtered ibex. Details of the horns and tied legs are carefully indicated. The other side of the body has been hollowed out as a bowl for holding make-up.
