Model of girl carrying a bundle

Height: 52cm

This servant carries a basket of food on her head and holds 2 geese in her right hand. Placed inside the tomb she guarantees the tomb owner an eternal food supply. Between 1902-04 Professor John Garstang of Liverpool University discovered 888 tombs at a cemetery called Beni Hasan in Middle Egypt. Each tomb was crammed full with specially made objects and food that would be needed in the afterlife. Professor Garstang took over 1000 photographs of his amazing finds.

Other models in the museum show men and women making beer, slaughtering oxen and girls bringing ducks and pigeons and baskets of food or beer on their heads. There are also models depicting boats and workshops for carpenters, weavers or potters.
