Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Lex Gielgud (1881-1917)

In 1909 Henry L Gielgud travelled to the Putumayo region as an accountant for the Peruvian Amazon Company. In 1910 he was part of a British team which exposed the company’s torture and slavery of their Huitoto and Bora work force.

During his time in South America, Gielgud amassed a large collection of indigenous artefacts which was later acquired by Liverpool Museum (now World Museum Liverpool).
