In the early 1900s, many indigenous Amazonians were given money for their labour
or in exchange for goods. Some made the coins into ornaments, beating them down
into triangular shapes which were called ‘butterflies’ by the
Barasana and other Northwest Amazon peoples. They combined
‘butterflies’ and beads to make neck, arm and ear ornaments.
