Animals: gifts from the ancestors

Amazonian myths tell of a time when people and animals could communicate, marry and transform into each other.

The first ancestors lost this ability when they emerged into the world, and began hunting animals for food.

Meat is an important part of the diet today but the connection between people and animals is still respected. Little is wasted – bones, fur and feathers are all turned into precious objects, providing spiritual protection and reinforcing social identity.
