Back ornament [tayukúnchi]

This ornament was made of over a hundred tayu bird bones and was part of a Shuar man’s ceremonial regalia.

It hung by the cotton strap from the back of his head and swayed when he danced, making the beetle wings rasp together.

Hunters needed courage to catch the shy tayu bird which nested in caves where jaguars (and jaguar spirits) lived.
